Zone Alarm, WTF

February 16th, 2007

When doing a view source of pages recently, you may have noticed a strange javascript of the form:

< code>
< script language= 'javascript' src='http://127.0.0.1:1025/js.cgi?pca&r=29350'>
< script language= 'javascript'>postamble();< /code>

The first line appears just above the < /head> tag, and the second below the < /html>.

Most people who do view source are webmasters, and often we are looking at our own pages. Imagine how disturbing it might be for a webmaster to find some code on his pages he did not put there.

As it turns out, the code is not actually in the source (at least not in the file that is on the server), but is an effect of having Zone Alarm installed on your desktop, with a certain configuration.

This is a troubling piece of information for Zone Labs to neglect sharing. At the very least, there could be something on their Web Site to reassure people who find this code and wonder what it is. This is mostly a “webmaster” issue, but clearly Zone Labs has underestimated the number of people these days to whom the term may be applied.

Zone Labs, fix this: TOTAL LACK OF INFORMATION ABOUT A STRANGE JAVASCRIPT YOU ARE PUTTING ON PEOPLE’S PAGES.
